At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hall is requesting Senator Bruce's help in attaining a position in Washington D.C. He said that he is trusting Senator Bruce to help him secure a position that is good for him and his family. Hall also mentions other Senators, particularly Francis M Cockrell, who would be willing to help both Bruce, and Hall in the endeavor.
