At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Re Antietam: "We had a terrible battle last week. May we soon see the last of them and of the war. You can hardly imagine the horror of that battle field the following day." After Antietam, Shaw commanded the all-black 54th Mass. Volunteer Infantry until his death in battle. With envelope, addressed to Professor Rogers.
