At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes of Jubal Early's arrest. "Your remarks upon the enclosed communication of Maj. Brown and G. are considered improper. They are therefore returned for withdrawal. Your attention is now called to the enclosed paper, marked A, showing the decision of the War Dept. and the comdg. General as to the method of transmission of orders in the Staff Departments. The instructions given by Maj. Brown to Maj. Hale are in accordance with their decision."
