At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

She is sending the letter along with one she has written to Horatio. She is planning to visit the North, and will be bringing as little as possible because the fashions might be different. She says that she is not dreading the "fatigues of the journey" because they are preferable to all the storms the area has been experiencing. She also includes news about her daughter Sarah as well as some of the people her sister met when she visited.
