At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

She continues to plan for her sister's arrival. She is very excited that they can "meet on this side of the grave again." A drought has made the river low, so Aurelia suggests her sister remain in Mobile until the steamboats start to run again. She again mentions being concerned for her sister's health, and mentions a "Brother Nicholas Merriwether" who is a physician and has promised to try to help Sarah recover her health.
