Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Clipping of a sketch depicting Boston soldiers searching for concealed weapons on the third floor of George Proctor Kane's police headquarters. Accompanies a note written by Isaac Ridgeway Trimble, colonel of engineers in Virginia's forces (Confederate), authorizing the delivery of ammunition to Kane, Marshal of Police for Baltimore, Maryland (refer to GLC08883.01). Verso of clipping contains advertisements for furniture, headache cures, and an English portable tent, among other items. Contains two pieces of mounting tape.
