At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Battle at Lexington" circa 1861-1877. Depicts combat between British forces and American minute-men. On the left an unkown man sits in shock holding the lifeless body of his comrade with another fallen American at his feet. Engraved by J. Rodgers after a painting by M. Nevin.
