At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Rogers' Slide, Lake George" circa 1861-1877. Depicts a view of Lake George with several boats on the lake. In the forefront four adults and one child relax on a boat. A man in white holds out his arm directing the attention of the other passengers to something in the distance. Engraved by John Cousen after a painting by Thomas Creswick after a sketch by William H. Bartlett.
