At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains a fifteen-verse poem written in commemoration of George Washington, who died 14 December 1799. The poem is entitled "On the decease of his excellency, George Washington" and is followed by the initials R. N. Includes two statements issued by the House of Representatives discussing Washington's funeral oration and the official Congressional mourning of Washington's death. Includes domestic and foreign news, notices of sale, and announcements. Frayed along the edges.
