At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports on the Union surrender of Plymouth in North Carolina. Mentions that the Confederates murdered the African American Union troops after the surrender but states that this can not be verified. Prints other war news. Reports on the 38th Congress, 1st session. Includes news from New Orleans and Mexico. Prints a legislative address of the Union members of the Assembly to the electors of the state of New York along with news from Albany. Reports the number of deaths in New York City for the week and breaks down the list by men, women, children, the cause of death, and nationality. On the last page is a description of the disaster on the U.S. steamer Chenago.
