Reporting that Union troops were between him and General Jones. Countersigned by General Pierre G. T. Beauregard, who adds a pencil note that forces were sent against the Union troops, who unfortunately already were retreating (GLC08238.01). Collateral is a note from Confederate Congressman Robert H. Smith to Beauregard regarding a conversation with Jefferson Davis on the possibility of capturing Washington, D.C. (GLC08238.02)
