At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Concerns the cession of reservation land in Minnesota, their removal, and the remuneration they will receive. Authorized by President Abraham Lincoln. Treaty arranged by William P. Dole, Commissioner on the part of the United States, Clark W. Thompson, Superintendent of Indian Affairs of the Northernsuperintendency, Henry M. Rice, and the Chippewa leaders on 11 March 1863 (and ratified on 19 March 1863).
