At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Comments on an untitled essay he wrote which dealt with the topics of succession and the tensions between the Northern and Southern states. In part: "Gen. Scott is all solicitude for the safety of the Union. He is, however, not without hope that all dangers & difficulties will pass away without leaving a scar or a painful recollection behind..."
