At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his friend about his daily activities now that the war is over and the troops are preparing to return home. Shares his hope to stay in Europe and travel with the YMCA shows. Promises to tell her all about his furlough once he returns to Louisville. Advises Hazel to keep from sending any more letters to France as he will probably not receive them. Written on YMCA letterhead. Written at Camp Coetquidan.
