At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Inscribed on verso: "Samuel Arnold. Conspirator. Imprisoned for life at Ft. Jefferson Fla. (Dry Tortuges) Pardoned by President Johnson. Released March 21, 1869." Photograph shows Arnold wearing a dark coat, vest, and tie; facing slightly to the right. Arnold is imprisoned aboard the U.S.S. Saugus.
