At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He wishes him success in his new promotion. Then lists the articles his son has asked him to send. He fills him in on the news such as that of Captain Hannah who was shot through the head by a man who seized his horse. Mr. Watson also congratulates him on his new promotion.
