At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports general news from home ("Aunt Emma is no better...."), inquires where they are likely to spend the winter, and again laments the Army's lack of action, although he commends the Navy: "Our naval expeditions are playing smart with them Sauf Cerolinians [sic]. I hope we will make them cry for mercy and then give them none."
