At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter to the quarterly and monthly meetings in Great Britain, Ireland, and elsewhere guiding Quaker conduct. The letter warns against overuse of credit, "[f]or by these Practices, many inncocent Wives and Children have been inevitably and unexpectedly involved in ruinous and deplorable Circumstances." Written in the fifth Quaker month.
