At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One document dated April 2, 1834. An agreement between James Cox, his wife Nancy and Matthew S. Marsh and Charles Clark. The agreement is for the sale of land from the Cox's to Marsh and Clark for five-hundred and seventy-five dollars. This document was written and signed by Abraham Lincoln. Co-signed by William Greene, with marks made by James Cox and Nancy Cox.
