At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In Baton Rouge, he was to take charge of the guns in defence. His wife arrived in New Orleans, only to lose all her luggage and escape with one dress. Later they went to Pattersonville where the fighting was severe. They mangaed to get some artillery and about 1500 prisoners.
