At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He discusses the new system of rationing, along with his observation of the execution of a deserter. He states his belief that the end of the war might be in sight, possibly as soon as January of 1864, along with own term of service being nine months from completion.
