At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cassedy is currently writing a biography of Mrs. Breedlove's father, James Winchester. He asks Mrs. Breedlove to have an engraving of her father made as a frontispiece for the book, which should be "as faithful to the truth of the countenance as the book itself will be to the character of the man." He expects that the upcoming presidential race will excite political controversy, and thus make the biography very popular
