Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter from the Cardinal de Fleury to the Marshal Count Koningsegg of the Hague regarding the latter's distributing of a private letter from the Cardinal. Includes King George II's speech to Parliament on 16 November 1742 and an account of the abduction of Joseph Guy by a Spanish privateer. Also, an obituary of Francis Pardigo, aged 114 years old. Domestic news and classified ads inhabit pages 2 through 4. Section reserved for announcing the indentured servitude of residents and the return of runaway slaves.
