At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The envelope has a image of agentleman talking to two ladies with a caption that reads " How Russel Got His News. Russel- Pray tell me all you know about the fight, so I can put my English friends all right. Old Woman- Oh! there was a Rustling Time. The cap'ured all the North, Swords, Guns and Shields. And put them all to work in the Coton Fields."
