At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from Carlisle Barracks. Writes Wilmer is doing well and has passed the surgeon's examination. He is being placed in the second United States Company as a private, but will have the opportunity to become a commissioned officer in ten years. Says he will send something to Mrs. Ogden so that she can get him a "box."
