At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from Camp Stoneman. Writes he is happy that he has placed his money in such good hands. The sum total is now seven hundred dollars. Discusses the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis stating, "I think the Government will soon give someone a contract to manufacture hemp, I believe they will surely hang Davis - and I think if ever a man was entitled to a hemp collar it is him."
