At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from the Military Department Marine Hospital that he has received another furlough for six days, in which he got a chance to walk around the city for the first time. Praises the "patriotic & charitable operations" headed by the women back home. He complains about his injury, which shows no sign of improvement. Includes an embossed seal in the upper left hand corner. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.
