At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions he has received and will examine "the memorial of the Citizens of Charleston S.C. against the new Tariff." Shares his view on tariff in detail and claims that on some articles, such as bar iron, they "were raised too high."

...it is clearly proved from the experience of all the civilized nations which have been before us to be the only true national policy...I would say generally that such articles as can be manufactured to a good degree of perfection & in sufficient quantities to supply our own market, ought to be raised so high as to give full protection...there seems to be but very small encouragement to increase our agricultural pursuits...
