At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the "petition for a viewing Committee on the subject of removing the court house" and states that there are "6 or 7 hundred signers" in his town. Also, mentions that he will send the petition when signed to Hobart as has been agreed, so that he can "give them all the attention they may require."
