At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter written by Franklin Butler Van Valkenburgh to his father, Jacob Van Valkenburgh. In this letter Franklin discusses family affairs and asks his father to consider coming to visit for Thanksgiving and to bringing his mother to visit as well. This letter is written on Waldo, Ody, and Van Attorneys and Counsellors at Law letterhead.
