At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Went to Vicksburg, Mississippi on horseback. Mary told him to explain a passage in one of his letters, but he cannot because he does not remember. Wants to know what he wrote in previous letters. Notes that he gets the "blues" once in a while. Gives a report on the Civil War.
