Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Several letters to the editor on page 1 mark conversions and religious undertakings for soldiers. An editorial proclaims Jesus "Christ as a Reformer." An article examines the revolutionary heroine "Molly Stark," compared to brave Civil War women. "Secular News" reports updates on Charleston, Washington, Harpers Ferry, and more. This section also includes a report of the Battle Between the CSS Alabama and USS Kearsage, with the Sinking of the Former.
