Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A lengthy tribute to "Col. O. E. Edward"s includes his biography and memorial to his death. Article regarding religion on page 2 include "Correspondence on Peace," "Sunday School Missionary," and "Erring Ministers."

A lengthy "Notes on the Times" section includes several excerpts from other newspapers, including Asheville News, the Richmond Enquirer, the Boston Courier, and the Mercury. Most reports in this section are focused on the Battle of Petersburg. Additional news includes a seige on Atlanta and updates from Vicksburg.
