Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Articles include "Ministerial Enthusiasm," "Sunday Schools," and "Baptizing Children." A special report on the burial of soldiers is included. An editorial titled "Our Young Men" lauds the patriotism of especially young soldiers. A report on page 2 and 3 from Dalton highlights prayer and baptism on the battlefront. "Notes on the Times" reports on a Union assault on Petersburg, General Sherman's victory at Resaca, skirmishes around Atlanta, and the resignation of General J. C. Pemberton, amongst other items.
