At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"We Plead for Our Soldiers" asks readers to support soldiers by sending bibles and papers. A discussion of "The Parable of the Tares" is included. In "Nomination," the editors publish their support for Dr. Boyce's seat in the Confederate Congress. A letter to the editor titled "Associations" examines associations within other denominations. "Secular News" reports on the Union victory at Vicksburg and Union attacks on Charleston amongst other news.
