Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"An Essay" on the safety of the church is published on request of the Union, continued in the next issue. An article examines "The Nobility in Human Character." A letter to the editor describes "Indigenous Medicinal Plants." "Southern Baptist Convention" describes the reorganization of the group. An editorial titled "A Word to the Wise" addresses a query about the paper's being sufficiently Baptist. "Secular News" includes another attack on Port Hudson and Union victory in Jackson, Mississippi, amongst other news.
