Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An untitled discourse by Rev. J.F. Morrall includes his views on the needs of the armies. "To the Poor Boys" laments the difficulties faced by poor boys in a world where wealth is value. "Hospital for Women" advertises a new hospital for women in Atlanta. A couple of letters not intended for publication, in regard to subscribing to the paper, are printed here. A blurb titled "Baptize the Whole Army" regards General Havelock's army. "Secular News" includesreports from Suffolk, West Point, Blackwater, Port Hudson, and Jackson, amongst other places.
