Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Army Correspondence" pritns a letter from a soldier near Charleston, South Carolina. An editorial titled "Our Church" commemorates the Baptist church as "the most grand fabric of life and joy in the world." Brief editorials examine "Proselytism" and the work of ministers throughout the war crisis ("Ministers and the Crisis"), as well as achieving and maintaining peace ("Peace"). "Secular News" reports on threats on Charleston and Vicksburg. An article titled "A Word of Advice to Girls" makes suggestions for young girls to support soldiers.
