Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The paper gives regular reports of the latest war news. Advertisements include runaway slave notices and slaves for sale; retail, real estate, and other items for sale; conscription substitutes wanted; lost items; and market reports. Telegraphic news is also included. Obituaries are printed, as are notices of deserters. Many issues contain minutes of the North Carolina Legislature or Acts and Resolutions of the North Carolina General Assembly. Most issues contain fugitive slave and negro for sale ads.
