At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A lengthy letter to the editor examines the relationship between the three branches of government. An article on the "Secession Ticket" exposes Union foibles, while another promotes the Union ticket. An editorial encourages vigilance in the upcoming election, and another article surmises the vote of expatriated rebels. Judge Thomas A. Marshall's acceptance speech of the legislative district in Louisville is printed, promoting Constitutional rights. Several letters refer to a previous article entitled "History." Other letters to the paper refer to the grape harvest.
