Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Negroes & Negro Slavery, Power of the South. A prize essay on commercial manures displays the winner of the Georgia State Agricultural Fair. One article demonstrates the benefit of slave labor in analyzing crop output. One letter to the editor remarks that this journal removes existing tension between the North and the South. A lengthy editorial describes secession as seen from the North, with its consequences.
