At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Proposition for an Armistice--Fernando Wood", a letter reprinted from the Herald, claims that a proposition was made to the President on December 12. In the "By Telegraph" section, a report from Chattanooga, Tennessee states that Morgan fought off the Yankees at Auburn, Tennessee, and "fought gallantly and killed and wounded a number of the Yankees, but was at last forcede to retire before superior numbers."
