At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This is a newspaper from the Southern Confederacy that includes articles about the removal of the Federal Capitol from the banks of the Potomac, the Battle and Victory at Murfreesboro, the admission of Western Virginia into the Federal Union, and an anecdote of Stonewall Jackson. Also includes runaway slave notices and various local advertisments. Features a quote on page one worth noting, "Canada will one day (and that speedily after the rebellion is over) be ours."
