At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This newspaper is from the Southern Confederacy and includes articles about "Charleston to be Defended at All Hazards" and "Ravages of the Enemy in Virginia". Also discussed is the effect of the blockade, referring to the Union blockade of Southern ports, and the feelings of citizens in the area and in Richmond.
