At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Bull Nelson Shot by General Davis -- The Cause of the Tragedy" details the circumstances surrounding the death of General Bull Nelson, reprinted from the Lynchburg Republican. Concludes with a "special dispatch" stating that General Jefferson C. Davis shot and killed Nelson. "Missouri & Western Kentucky" a dispatch on military advances reprinted from the Charleston Mercury. Two other articles report on the public response to the Emancipation Proclamation: "The Chicago Times on Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation," and "The President's Proclamation - Its Reception." Includes other accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
