At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An article titled, "The Negro Regiment of South Carolina: Explanation of Gen. Hunter" prints correspondence between Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton and Major General D. Hunter regarding a report that Hunter has mustered a regiment of fugitive slaves. Another article, "General Grant has Ordered all Confederate Families to Leave Memphis". Includes accounts of proceedings in the U.S. Senate, troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
