Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Subjects include military Movements Near Pensacola, and Movements in Tennessee. There is a notice on the second page advising: "citizens owning plantations on the Stono, Wadmalaw, and Pon Pon Rivers, and all other points in this Military District, accessible to the enemy, will immediately remove their Negroes, and as far as practiceable, other property, into some safe place in the inferior." Advertisements for food, wool, dry goods, and other miscellaneous items.
