At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The collection contains five 1861 issues with particular attention to war news and minutes of the Georgia Legislature. Many of the same articles appear reprinted in each issue, namely lists of the members of the various standing committees of the state House of Representatives, lists of elected senators and representatives, and instructions for the collection of war taxes, as well as gubernatorial proclamations and information on the Georgia Hospital of Richmond.
