At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written aboard the U.S.S. Concord and the U.S.F.S. Baltimore. Particularly focused around Port Arthur, Japan. U.S.F.S. Baltimore containing 1) 9 October 1894 Nippon, Japan, "S. Ito, Commander-in-chief of H. I. Japanese M.'s United Squadron" "Official Report of the Naval Engagement which took place in the sea off Taikoshan . . . (Extract [and translation] from the report made by our commander-in-chief of the Fleet" and 2) 2 October 1894 Jiji Shimpo "The Real Condition of the Great Naval Battle in the Yellow Sea." Collateral material removed from volume: envelope addressed to Lieutenant Edward Simpson, U.S.N. which includes a Japanese newspaper with hand-written notes in English. Quarter red leather and corners; red, blue and yellow marbled covers.
