Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by Voice Publishing Co. Contains reprint of Douglass's "Men of Color, to Arms" from the 2 March 1863 printing: "This is our golden opportunity. Let us accept it and forever wipe out the dark reproaches unsparingly hurled against us by our enemies." Also includes a printing of a radio speech by Mrs. Howard W. Coles on Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony (originally delivered 3 November 1947). Includes an article on Abraham Lincoln, and a quiz on African American history. Stamped "Sample." On first page, contains a print of a photograph of Douglass.
